How Long Does It Take to Get a Driver's License in New York?

Getting a driver's license in New York can take anywhere from two weeks to several months, depending on the individual. After passing the practice test, the examiner will provide instructions on how to receive the test results. If you pass, you will be issued a provisional license that allows you to drive. Keep this with your photo learner's permit until your new license arrives in the mail, which usually takes two weeks.

To ensure a speedy process, it is important to be thorough and theatrical with your movements during the road test. Exaggerate your every move so the supervisor can see your every move. Adjust your mirrors even if they are perfect, count to three in your head at stop signs, and look at the mirrors and side windows to make sure your head is spinning, not just your eyes. When parking, make sure not to hit the sidewalk and don't talk to the supervisor - just confirm their instructions with a yes or an ok.

If you don't renew your license within two years of its expiration date, you will need to start the process of obtaining a new license as if you never had one. If you are under 21 and renew more than 40 days before your 21st birthday, your license will have “Under 21” printed on it. To change from a junior license to a senior license, bring your junior license and student completion certificate (MV-28) to any DMV office. You will receive an official license the same day you pass your exam, but it may take a few weeks for your license with a real photo to arrive in the mail.

To speed up the process, you can complete a high school or college driver's education course and receive an MV-28 certificate (valid for two years), or take a five-hour pre-license course at a driving school and obtain an MV-27 certificate (valid for one year). When you pass your driving test, you must give your foreign driver's license to the DMV road test examiner.
