Getting a Florida Driver's License: Requirements and Tips

Are you looking to get a driver's license in the state of Florida? The process can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. The Lee County Tax Collector is committed to helping you understand the requirements and tips for getting your driver's license in Florida. The first step is to make sure you meet the requirements set by the Department of Homeland Security's Real Identification Act. To verify compliance, look for a gold star located in the upper right corner of your most current driver's license or identification card.

If you don't have a gold star, you may need to provide additional documentation. If you are not a U. S. citizen or permanent resident, you will need to provide nonimmigrant documents that are valid for four years or less, depending on the expiration date of your current immigration documents.

You will also need to provide proof of your social security number if you have been authorized by USCIS to work in the United States. The Florida DMV recommends making an appointment at your local driver's license office, but it is not required for many services. When you arrive, make sure to bring all necessary documents and identification. If you have recently changed your name, you must bring a court order or marriage certificate to prove the change within 10 days of the change.

If you are under 18 years old, you must complete a traffic law and substance abuse education course before getting your license. You will also need to practice driving with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old seated in the front seat next to you. Once you have all the necessary documents and have completed any required courses, you can apply for your driver's license at your local driver's license office. You may be required to return another day for additional testing due to the volume of driving tests conducted at each location. Getting a driver's license in Florida doesn't have to be difficult.

By following these requirements and tips, you can make sure that you are prepared when it comes time to apply for your license.
