Present one or more acceptable documents that establish your identity and date of birth. Provide your SSN, if eligible, which will be verified electronically with the SSA. Before your appointment, you will need to fill out the Application for a Driver's License or Identification Card (Form DL-4). This form is available at DMV offices, but you can save yourself some time by completing the online application.
Once you arrive at the DMV office for your appointment, a representative will be able to verify that the form is properly completed. Young drivers will need to complete some additional steps to obtain a license. To begin with, you will apply for a provisional permit. To obtain a provisional permit, a parent's signature on DL 44 is required, in addition to the other documents mentioned above.
If both parents have custody, both parents must sign. Another thing you'll need is a certificate of completion from a California driver's education provider or proof that you are currently enrolled in driving training. The training behind the wheel must consist of at least 50 hours of driving. Ten of those hours have to be at night.
An instruction permit is not valid unless you participate in driver training. During the permit period, you cannot drive alone. After six months of driving with another California licensed driver who is 25 years of age or older, you can take the driving test for a driver's license. California residents who have never obtained a driver's license before have to go through a few more obstacles.
Once you have met these requirements and USCIS verifies your legal presence, you will obtain your driver's license. Details on license categories and subtypes can be found below, as well as in the California Driver's Handbook. The J-2 must then submit the denial letter to the DMV, along with documents proving their legal presence, to apply for their driver's license. Within the non-commercial category, there are subtypes of licenses that authorize drivers to operate specific types of motor vehicles.
After passing your driving test, you'll get a temporary driver's license that will be valid for 90 days. People applying for a California driver's license or identification card are often asked to have a Social Security number, but it's not required if you are in a state that is not eligible for the SSN (e.g., when applying for a new CA driver's license, you should refer to the steps in section Application for a California driver's license below. Before going to the DMV, check if you need to apply for a new driver's license or not. Dependents who are legally present in the U.S.
U.S. citizens, but who are not eligible for an SSN (such as J-2) must take additional steps to be eligible for a driver's license. You should know that your driving test is likely to be waived if you already have a driver's license from another state. Once you have established your residency in the state, you must apply for your CA driver's license in 10 days or less.
If you already have a driver's license in another state, you don't have to start from scratch after moving to California.
